Morrisons expands grocery deliveries through Deliveroo partnership

Morrisons has partnered with Deliveroo to offer on-demand delivery of essential grocery items during the coronavirus pandemic.

Accessible via the Deliveroo website and app, the service will allow customers to receive delivery in a minimum of 30 minutes of a range of 70 essential items such as bread, meat and vegetables. Products will be offered at the same price as in a Morrisons store, with a flat £4.99 delivery fee.

The service will be available from over 130 Morrisons stores across the UK, reaching one in four households.

Morrisons CEO David Potts said: “Our partnership with Deliveroo will help us to continue to play our full part in feeding the nation.

“Customers will be able to order essential products from Morrisons biked by Deliveroo to the door in as little as under 30 minutes. It’s a great combination of traditional and modern methods and it will provide more vulnerable people with the opportunity to receive their home delivery.”

Ajay Lakhwani, VP of new business, Deliveroo said: “With families and vulnerable people in isolation, it is more important than ever that we make sure they have access to the essential household items they need. During this worrying period we want to play our role in making sure people have access to a range of items, in particular the vulnerable who cannot leave their homes.

Morrisons previously teamed up with DPD to add a new home grocery delivery channel for vulnerable customers forced to stay home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new food box service offers £30 worth of basic, everyday groceries with a £5 delivery charge and next-day delivery available at no extra cost. Customers can order two boxes per order.

Working with app-based companies such as Deliveroo while using stores as distribution centres is becoming increasingly popular for supermarkets, which are seeing their usual distribution channels swamped by demand. In France, Carrefour is working with Uber Eats, while in Spain, DIA is working with Glovo.
