Editorial: Powering up for peak

With Black Friday done and Christmas now already less than a month away peak operations really are now in force. This week has seen Hermes make its Christmas delivery guarantee for the sixth year running as it pledges to deliver customers parcels in time for Christmas or it will refund the delivery charge.

Argos has added new collection points and stores within Sainsbury’s, as well as a new regional fulfilment centre to ensure that it can cope with Black Friday and Christmas demand and click and collect provider Doddle says that its Black Friday volumes were up 115% as customers opted for the service.

At Amazon Black Friday saw planned demonstrations by GMB members at five warehouses across the country after the union accused the company of poor working conditions.

Elsewhere in the news this week we have an exclusive interview with Pets at Home who are working on a two-phase automation project to reduce the cost of delivery and distribution.

Yodel meanwhile has invested £1 million in a new semi-automated sort facility at its Wednesbury site that will handle bulky or delicate parcels.

And finally we have news of the creation of the UK’s largest privately owned logistics company combining six companies into a new entity called EV Cargo.
