Dash-cams show the way ahead for Transline home delivery

Forward-facing dashboard cameras are being installed across 200 vehicles in the Transline Logistics home delivery fleet, in an attempt to cut costs and ensure driving standards.

The 3G-enabled cameras are already on-board 40 of Transline’s vans and trucks, with the rest coming on stream later this year, the company has said.

The IT1000 cameras are from Surrey-based Intelligent Telematics.

Phil Chester, fleet and risk manager at Transline Group said: “We are committed to assessing and training each of our drivers to meet all legal and health & safety obligations, while achieving the highest levels of operational performance. We expect the IT1000 3G cameras to help raise standards within the business and we are already seeing a noticeable shift in driver behaviour. Moving forward, this will enable us to improve road safety, reduce insurance costs and enhance Duty of Care.”

Transline already uses tracking software on-board its vehicles – both company-owned and driver-owned – and is now seeking full visibility of all fleet activity.

In addition to recording the sequence of events in a road traffic accident, Transline said it hopes the cameras will enable the company to identify areas of improvement. The cameras will also feed into detailed reports giving a complete breakdown of all collisions, near misses and other driving events. The output from such repots could be fed into driver training programmes, heath & safety reports, or even police investigations.

The cameras use 3G connectivity to transmit recordings, rather than store them on SD cards which can be prone to loss or damage, and which offer the ability to view footage within seconds online.

Sam Footer, head of international business and strategic development at Intelligent Telematics said: “Our IT1000 forward-facing camera provides unrivalled visibility of road collisions and other harsh driving events, so commercial vehicle operators can reduce the severity and frequency of vehicle fleet insurance claims, while helping modify driving styles and minimise potential risk. Fleet businesses are increasingly recognising the multiple benefits that can be achieved in terms of operating more responsibly and efficiently.”
