Editor’s column: ring out the old, ring in the new

This is the first editor’s column piece of a new year. The beginning of each new year is typically a time for reflection and looking ahead with a positive, go-getting air.

The new year is only a week old, but there’s already a lot to reflect upon.

The collapse of City Link has given many people something to think about. We talked to one of the UK’s largest carriers, a leading academic (with a knighthood and a CBE to his name, no less) and other key figures in the industry and asked whether they felt City Link’s demise was an indication of wider problems in the industry.

For Buckinghamshire-based parcel firm DX, there were opportunities to be had, proving the old adage that’s it’s an ill wind that blows no one no good.

On a more upbeat note, we hear about social commerce and what implications Twitter’s Buy Now button may have for the sector.

We also speak to Michael Kliger, of eBay Enterprise, who touches on trends he thinks will set the scene as 2015 unfolds.

If the Christmas trading statements of John Lewis and House of Fraser are anything to go by, one of those trends is likely to be the continuing growth of click-and-collect.
