Investing in drivers is critical to delivering great customer service when it comes to delivery, according to Dave Crellin, head of online operations at Sainsbury’s.
Speaking at eDelivery Expo last week, Crellin said that for his company drivers were a year-round resource to be invested in rather than simply a resource to recruit for peak.
“The demand for great drivers has never been higher so how do we approach it? We are actively investing a lot of time and effort and are absolutely committed to employing our own fleet of drivers,” he said.
He said the company ensured it rewarded and treasured such staff. “We treat them as best as we can and we pay them fairly for what is a really hard job. We rely on them all year round and rely on them especially more at peak. Peak is the result of the work we are doing throughout the year, we can’t simply turn on a pool of fantastic drivers,” he said.
